‘Hope for Albania’ There are no nursing or rest homes in Korça, the second largest city in Albany. Many elderly residents suffer from neglect and spend lonely days in solitary confinement waiting for death. Reports of senior citizens found in a state of exhaustion, starvation or freezing in the cold are not uncommon. Marleen van de Voorde, a trained nurse, has taken the fate of these forgotten seniors to heart. Together with a team of helpers she makes daily rounds in the city, delivering food, caring for the sick and lighting stoves.
