‘Targeting the cleaning lady’ During the past two years, dozens of cleaning ladies and handymen being paid under the table have been arrested in Haarlem’s posh neighbourhoods. The immigration authorities were tipped off by the Connexxion bus company, which had been having problems with fare jumpers. In several cases, they turned out to be undocumented individuals. Consequently, the police began following black people from a bus stop to their place of employment to catch them in the act of working illegally. The court subsequently ruled against the practice, however. The police do not have the right to follow people on the basis of the colour of their skin and ask them for their papers.
